Profile

Backend-leaning full-stack engineer with 7 years building payment and order systems in TypeScript, Go and PostgreSQL. Comfortable owning a service end to end: schema, API, tests, deploy and on-call.

Experience

Software Engineer2022 — Present
Cardinal Loop
  • Own the payments service handling checkout, refunds and reconciliation for the company's merchant platform.
  • Cut p95 checkout latency from 820ms to 310ms by replacing synchronous provider calls with a queued settlement worker.
  • Introduced contract tests between the payments and ordering services, removing the release freeze that used to precede every deploy.
Software Engineer2019 — 2022
Ardent Retail Cloud
  • Built and maintained the inventory sync API used by roughly 400 storefronts, in Node.js and PostgreSQL.
  • Migrated the nightly batch importer to incremental change-data-capture, reducing sync lag from 12 hours to under 5 minutes.
Associate Software Engineer2017 — 2019
Halden Interactive
  • Shipped features across a React front end and a Django API for an internal scheduling product.
  • Raised unit test coverage on the scheduling module from 24% to 71% while fixing the recurring double-booking defect.

Template used

Modern

The example is set in the Modern template: a compact single-column layout with a clear typographic hierarchy, which keeps a technical resume readable when the experience section runs long. All four templates carry exactly the same information.

Note: the editor opens with the default template. The template shown here is not transferred to the editor yet; you can switch it in one click once inside.

Anatomy of the example

How this resume is structured

Six blocks on a single page, in the order a hiring team reads them. Everything described here appears literally in the document above.

Header and contact

Name, the target title (Software Engineer) and one contact line with email, city and state, and a LinkedIn profile. No photo, no full street address — US screening does not use them and they cost space.

Resume summary

Two lines that state level, stack and scope: seven years on payment and order systems in TypeScript, Go and PostgreSQL, and comfort owning a service from schema to on-call. It names the work, not adjectives about the person.

Work experience

Three roles in reverse chronological order: Software Engineer at Cardinal Loop since March 2022 (current), Software Engineer at Ardent Retail Cloud from June 2019 to February 2022, and Associate Software Engineer at Halden Interactive from August 2017 to May 2019. The progression from associate to owning a service is visible without being claimed.

Bullets that carry an outcome

Each bullet opens with a verb and, where a number exists, uses it: p95 checkout latency from 820ms to 310ms, sync lag from 12 hours to under 5 minutes, test coverage from 24% to 71%. The ones without a number state scope instead — owning the payments service, adding contract tests between two services.

Technical skills

Eight skills named the way job ads name them: TypeScript, Go, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, AWS, Docker and automated testing. Each of them belongs to work described in a role, so the list is evidenced rather than aspirational. No proficiency bars.

Education and languages

One entry — BSc in Computer Science, University of Texas at Dallas, 2013-2017 — placed last, which is where it belongs after seven years of work. Languages close the page: English native, Spanish B2.

Adapting it

How to tailor this example to your own job search

General guidance, not a score. We have not run this example through the analysis engine, so no ATS result is claimed for it.

  • Match the title to the role

The header title mirrors the job you are applying to. If the ad says 'Backend Engineer', use that rather than an internal title nobody outside your company recognises.

  • Keep the stack honest

List only technologies that appear in your experience. A skills line with fourteen languages and no bullet mentioning any of them reads as padding.

  • Quantify what you can measure

Latency, coverage, build time, incident count, request volume. If you do not have the number, describe the system's scope instead of inventing a figure.

  • Show ownership, not tickets

'Own the payments service' says more than a list of features. Name the surface you were responsible for and what changed while you had it.

  • Trim early roles

Every role here gets two or three bullets, and the oldest one gets the shortest treatment. Older experience shrinks as newer experience earns the space.

  • Use the words in the job ad

Filters search literal terms. 'PostgreSQL' and 'relational databases' are not the same query, so write both only if both are true.

Applicant tracking systems extract text before anyone reads it, so a single-column layout, standard section headings and dated roles matter as much as the wording. SmartVitae includes an ATS analysis that runs those checks against your own document and tells you what is missing and where.

FAQ

About this software engineer resume example

Is Marcus Hale a real engineer?
No. It is a fictional demo profile written to show the format. The companies, dates, metrics and contact details are invented and should not be reused in your own resume.
How long should a software engineer resume be?
This example fits seven years of experience on one page by keeping three bullets on the current role and two on each older one. One page is a reasonable target under ten years; beyond that, a second page is normal.
Where do technical skills go?
In this example they sit near the end as a plain list, while each skill is also evidenced inside a role. That way a reader scanning the list and a filter searching for a term both find it.
Do I need a separate projects section?
Only if projects carry weight your jobs do not — typically early-career or a career change. This example has seven years of relevant work, so the experience section does that job.
Is this resume example ATS-friendly?
It uses a single-column layout, standard headings, dated roles and selectable text, which is what parsers handle best. We do not claim a score for it, and no resume can guarantee passing a specific employer's filter.
Can I copy this resume?
Don't. Use the structure and the level of specificity, then write your own history. 'Create my resume' opens the editor with a blank document.
